OUR HISTORY

For the past 65 years, sun protection has been our number one priority — constantly trying to innovate and offer new solutions to consumers. Having created our first sunscreen in 1944, our solar scientists continually research, develop and commit to new standards in sunscreen safety so people can enjoy the sun without experiencing its harmful effects. That’s why parents with babies or children, adults, sport enthusiasts or swimmers, know that Coppertone® is the expert in sun protection.

The History of Suncare is the history of Coppertone®

Sunscreen established its roots during WWII when airman and future pharmacist Benjamin Green helped develop a sun protective formula for soldiers. In 1944, Green used his invention as the basis for Coppertone® Suntan Cream — the very first consumer sunscreen product. In fact, this mixture of cocoa butter was concocted on his wife’s stove and tested on his own bald head.
