Sun Smart tips and advice
Five simple rules for sun-safe fun in the sun
1. Wear sunscreen. Every day. All year-round.
- Choose a broad-spectrum product with an SPF of 30 or more.
- Remember that UV rays can penetrate clouds, and that concrete, sand, water and snow reflect them back to you!
2. Choose the right product.
- Determine the SPF protection you need, based on your skin type, location and activity.
- Don't forget to check your local UV index and weather forecast!
3. Apply generously. And often.
- Apply 15 to 30 minutes before exposure.
- Use at least 30 ml of sunscreen to protect an average-size body.
- Cover all exposed areas. Don't forget ears, nose, the top of feet and the back of knees!
- Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, especially after swimming, vigorous activity, sweating or towelling.
4. Reduce exposure to the sun, especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m..
- Seek the shade during these peak hours.
- Wear a wide-brimmed or legionnaire-style (with a back flap) hat, 100% UV sunglasses and protective clothing.
5. Wear a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing.
- Wear clothing that covers as much of your skin as possible.
- Choose a wide-brimmed or legionnaire-style (with a back flap) hat. Remember, baseball caps don't protect the ears or the vulnerable neck area!
- Make sure sunglasses are 100% UV. Wraparound are best!
